Racism in Perinatal & Pediatric Health
Wednesday, February 17, 2021, 9:00 AM - 11:00 AM PDT
Category: Oregon Public Health Events

Black and Indigenous birthing people are 2-3 times more likely to die in childbirth than non-BIPOC parents. Black infants are 9x more likely to be offered formula than white infants, compromising breastfeeding. Racism at the personal and systemic levels has shaped the health outcomes of new parents and their children - as perinatal health professionals, we each have a responsibility to create change for a more equitable pregnancy, birth, postpartum, and infant care experience.

Please join Nurturely for Racism in Perinatal & Pediatric Health, a six-week virtual series tackling systemic racism within pregnancy, birth, postpartum, and infant health care, featuring talks by nationally-recognized experts on health equity with group discussion led by The Black Doula focused on co-creating action and accountability plans. Primary topics of focus will be 1) Anti-Racism: what it is and how it can be achieved in a perinatal and pediatric care setting, and 2) Advocacy: how care providers can be advocates for Black, Indigenous, and People of Color patients at the personal and systemic levels.

Live virtual sessions start January 20th and run weekly on Wednesdays from 9-11 am. All sessions will be recorded for registered participants, and there will be ample opportunities for engagement and interaction outside of the scheduled Wednesday morning sessions. All Oregon-based professionals who work with expectant and new parents are encouraged to attend, including but not limited to nurses, physicians, midwives, home visitors, social workers, mental health professionals, doulas, insurance providers, educators, and community organizations. Sliding scale to increase accessibility - please register by 12/31 to access the scholarship application and the lowest tier of the sliding scale.
